Guild Session #9 with John from Edible Forest Gardens
We were excited to have John from Edible Forest Gardens at our October Permablitz Designers Guild Meeting. John has been a plant buff his whole life and after a PDC with Pete the Permie, John got into seriously cultivating rare edible perennials. He brought in dozens of perrenials edibles on the night, all of which his nursery stocks, and shared his wealth of knowledge on an extensive range of plants!
From edible flowers to varieties of shade plants, we’d do well to incorporate more of these perennial varieties in our permablitz designs and personal backyards.
Some of the exciting varieties discussed during the night include Capsicum pubescens, a perennial tree pepper, myoga ginger (Zingiber mioga), an easy shade plant with edible flowers and shoots, and Egyptian walking onion (Allium proliferum) which has 140x the antioxidants than your average white onion at the supermarket! Of the potential staple crops mentioned were perennial buckwheat and skirret (Sium sisarum), a sugar root crop which produces bunches of skinny white roots. Also mentioned were edible hibiscus, fuscia, and violets – keep in mind that some varieties are tastier than others!
