Event: 'Permablitz Dia De Semillas (Day Of Seeds)'

Permablitz
Date: Saturday, November 25, 2006 At 10:00
Contact Info:
Nelson 85026300 or Dan 0422448933

After a spree of fine blitzes running at times back to back over weekends and drawing upwards of 30 folks a pop, the permablitzes roll on with the next this Saturday November 25 at the house of Nelson in Springvale. The theme of the day will be a day of seeds (dia de semillas) and also visiting the sites of past blitzes to follow through and make sure they're being maintained okay.

We'll meet at 14 Whiteside St Springvale between 10 and 11am to spend about three hours planting up a small mountain of seeds that Dan brought back from his recent mission up north. Bring as many seedling trays (egg cartons or toilet roll tubes in trays are fine) and seedling mix (sieved compost mixed with 50% river sand is a recipe for success if you don't want to to buy the commercial stuff) as you can carry, along with any excess seeds you'd like to swap or share. Marker pens and white plastic for labels also a good idea. Folks can take planted seeds away with them or leave them in Nelson's competent hands for distribution once they germinate and of course for use on future blitzes. We'll have hands-on seed saving demos and also move along Nelson's chook tractor and plant out a bed with corn, tomatoes and eggplant. Nelson tells us that his neighbors have peeked over the fence and copied his chook tractor idea so we'll nip over there to check that out too.

Then, around 2 or 3pm, we'll form a convoy and head for the casita (little house) of Vilma, the now-legendary site of permablitz numero uno. Vilma's garden is now a semi-wild forest of food and we'll learn about what is edible by whipping up a giant salad straight from the garden. We'll also catch up with Vilma's worm farm which is full of ripe castings ready for application and quickly re-blitz the garden with summer-appropriate plants, followed by a bbq or whatever people are into. Being that Codemo will be there in force, you'd best be on the safe side and bring your dancing as well as your gardening shoes. If you've been to one of these days before, you'll know that anything could happen. Call Nelson on 85026300 for more info and get yourself along for another great day of learning together about the joys of growing your own nosh where you live. A contribution to a shared lunch would always be appreciated, especially if it comes from your own garden.
